These both refer to how electricity flows from the panels, and it’s actually quite simple to understand. Direct currents are flows of electrons that travel one way, i.e. from the panels to your home. Alternating currents flow both ways, just like a two-way street. With solar panels, the electricity will, without the inverter, travel in a direct current, but alternating currents are what you want to have for homes and residential areas, as this helps save power and provide electricity throughout the entire home. An inverter converts the direct current to an alternating one.

 

How Does An Inverter Convert A Solar Power System To Have An Alternating Current?

So far, understand what an inverter does on a surface level is pretty simple, right? But what about knowing how an inverter is able to convert a direct current to an alternating current? Again, it’s more simple than you might initially think. Let’s break down the steps one-by-one:

  1. When the grid’s alternating current storage is near zero, the inverter stores the power.
  2. The inverter releases the stored power when the voltage goes up.
  3. This energy is stored in what’s called an electrolytic capacitor, which can recharge again and again, thus creating a cycle of stores and releases to fuel your home.

 

Essentially, as power passes through the inverter, it’s stored and then released back. This is done again and again as power goes back and forth throughout your home. Why this is important to understand is because inverters will all eventually need replacing. Depending on the quality of the inverter, yours could last for decades. You may want to get your home’s energy assessed by an expert every few years or so to ensure that your inverter is running strong.
